Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa shared the PGA Championship lead after the third round on Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky while Shane Lowry made an epic charge up a jam-packed leader board and Scottie Scheffler lost ground.

Schauffele, who held the solo lead after the first two rounds, birdied the final two holes at Valhalla Golf Club en route to a three-under-par 68 that left him at 15 under on the week and level with twice major winner Morikawa (67).

“I need to really just stay in my lane and do a lot of what I’ve been doing and just worry about myself,” Olympic champion Schauffele, seeking his first major, said about his approach for Sunday’s final round.

Seven players are within four strokes of the leaders, including Sahith Theegala (67), who made five back-nine birdies and sits alone in third place.

Former British Open winner Lowry, whose 62 matched the lowest score in Major championship history, LIV Golf’s Bryson DeChambeau (67), who eagled the final hole, and Viktor Hovland (66) were two shots off the lead.

Schauffele was fresh off draining a 29-foot birdie putt at the 14th to open a two-shot cushion before encountering trouble at the par-four 15th where his second shot found the long rough, leading to a double-bogey.

Liverpool fans were bidding farewell to their charismatic manager Juergen Klopp on Sunday with songs, murals and other tributes to an eight-year reign that brought the glory days back to one of England’s greatest clubs.

The bespectacled 56-year-old German was to manage his beloved Reds for the 491st and final time at 4 p.m. (1500 GMT) against Wolverhampton Wanderers in front of a sellout crowd at Anfield.

With the Premier League game itself largely irrelevant now Liverpool cannot win the title, all focus was on Klopp, who had fought back tears as fans serenaded him at his final away game.

“We’ll never see his like again … He’s one of us,” waxed John Pearman, founder of Liverpool fan magazine “Red All Over The Land” which brought out a special Klopp edition.

After leading the team to seven trophies, including Europe’s Champions League in 2019 and a first English league title in three decades in 2020, Klopp is leaving of his own volition to recharge his batteries.

He has not said what he will do next, beyond ruling out managing another club in England, out of respect for the working class port city he came to love as his own.

“I could have grown up here,” he said in a club video.

“We gave Liverpool the best time of our life, and the other way round as well. I will never walk alone ever again in my life,” he added, alluding to the song by 1960s Liverpool band Gerry and the Pacemakers that became the club anthem.

It was not only success that endeared Klopp to fans.

They loved his passion and personality: fist-pumps at the end of games, bear hugs for players, time for charitable causes, indignant protests at dubious decisions, and insistence on a high-energy aggressive “gegenpress” style of football.

After decades of mediocrity, when arch-rivals Manchester United were the top dogs in England, Klopp restored Liverpool’s pride, his irrepressible zeal eclipsing other Premier League managers.

“Watching Klopp and so many of the incredible players he developed made me fall in love with football, making the fact he’s leaving hurt even more,” said 15-year-old fan Freddie Williams before the Wolves game.

“He’s given the fans what they’d been longing for the past 30 years, putting Liverpool back on top. The moments he’s created, the laughter he’s given us along with his immense success has made him irreplaceable at LFC.”

In pubs and back streets, supporters recalled their favourite Klopp moments: the four-goal comeback against Barcelona in a 2019 Champions League semi-final, a 7-0 drubbing of Manchester United in 2023, or his manic leaping charge across the pitch after a last-ditch winner against derby rivals Everton in 2018.

Ever the gentleman, Klopp later apologised for disrespecting Everton.

‘I’M IN LOVE’

The fans’ song for Klopp is a delirious version of the Liverpool-born Beatles’ “I Feel Fine”.

“I’m so glad that Juergen is a Red, I’m so glad he delivered what he said!” they chant.

“Juergen said to me ‘you know, we’ll win the Premier League you know’, he said so! I’m in love with him and I feel fine!”

Players, too, were emotional about the man who revived careers and made giants of the likes of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, while nurturing a plethora of new talent.

“He’s like a fatherly figure for everyone,” said 21-year-old midfielder Harvey Elliott. “An amazing person to be around. I’ve learned so much off him, I can’t be thankful enough.”

The German’s stay in Liverpool has also spawned a slew of new wall art. One of the latest murals shows a heroic-looking Klopp in black-and-white holding his hand to his chest against a backdrop of Liverpool’s red-and-white colours.

Above it are the words: “We believed”.

Max Verstappen secured his eighth consecutive pole position in qualifying for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola on Saturday to equal the record of Ayrton Senna. The Red Bull three-time world champion’s dominance in qualifying drew him level with Senna’s run of eight poles, poignantly three decades after the late great Brazilian’s tragic death at the Italian circuit in 1994. “It’s a great start to the year but also very special 30 years since he passed away at this track,” said Verstappen.

“Of course, very pleased to get pole here and in a way it’s a nice memory to him (Senna), he was an incredible Formula 1 driver especially in qualifying laps as well, so a great day for me and a great day for the team, I’m very very happy.”

Oscar Piastri’s McLaren was to have started alongside the unstoppable Dutchman on Sunday after posting the second fastest time 0.074 seconds behind in a tight qualifying session.

However, the Australian was docked three grid places for impeding the Haas of Kevin Magnussen.

That promoted McLaren teammate Lando Norris, winner last time out in Miami, to the front row.

The two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will set off from the second row with Piastri now alongside the Mercedes of George Russell on the third row.

Yuki Tsunoda’s RB, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), Daniel Ricciardo (RB), and Nico Hulkenberg (Haas) rounded out the top 10.

The glaring absentee from the first five rows was the Red Bull of Sergio Perez, who went out in the second qualifying session, the Mexican muttering “what a mess” on the team radio.

– ‘Tiny margins’ –

Piastri had initially been thrilled to get so close to taking pole.

“My lap was a bit scruff in the final corner, but it is so difficult to do a perfect lap at this circuit,” he said before the penalty was handed down.

Norris added: “Not a bad job, it’s all about tiny margins.”

After a chaotic third practice on a beautiful sunlit day at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari Verstappen was swiftly on the pace and went top after eight minutes in 1:16.013 only to be outpaced within a minute by Piastri and then Norris, the McLarens endorsing their practice speed.

Fernando Alonso’s difficult day continued when his Aston Martin went off at the exit of Tamburello, taking a dive through the gravel, but avoiding any contact with the barriers. He pitted, accepting he could not improve on 20th and last on the grid.

Hulkenberg then went top for Haas before Verstappen outpaced him along with Leclerc as Q1 ended with Valtteri Bottas of Sauber, Logan Sargeant of Williams Zhou Guanyu of Sauber and Magnussen, in the second Haas, exiting with Alonso.

Hamilton was out early to top Q2 ahead of Russell before the Red Bulls finally found their pace, Verstappen going top in 1:15.386, despite running wide at Rivazza, with Perez second. All were running on softs.

Leclerc then took the initiative with Tsunoda slotting into second place, all proof that Red Bull were not having it their own way – and the top seven all within half a second of the pace.

On their second runs, Verstappen improved to take top spot, but team-mate Perez missed out on the top-ten shootout and was eliminated in 11th along with Esteban Ocon of Alpine, Lance Stroll of Aston Martin, Alex Albon of Williams and Pierre Gasly, sporting a Senna-yellow helmet, in the second Alpine.

The top four were separated by four-tenths of a second for the final runs which saw Verstappen, digging into his reserves of talent, grab pole with a dazzling lap in 1:14.746 – a clear example of an outstanding driver delivering beyond the potential of his car.

Lionel Messi returned to the starting lineup for Inter Miami’s match against DC United on Saturday after missing the club’s previous game because of knee soreness.

The Argentine star forward didn’t play in Inter Miami scoreless draw against Orlando City on Wednesday. Before his absence in the midweek match, Messi appeared in six consecutive games, playing the central role in Miami’s rise to the top of the MLS Eastern Conference.

Messi scored or assisted in five straight games until Inter Miami’s 3-2 win against Montreal last Saturday.

The likelihood of Messi playing in this match increased after he participated in team workouts the past two days.

The start of the match was in a weather delay after thunderstorms hit Chase Stadium before the clubs’ pregame drills.

Lionel Messi was kept off the scoresheet for the second consecutive match, but Inter Miami extended its unbeaten string with a 1-0 win over DC United on Saturday night.

Leo Campana scored four minutes into second half stoppage time as Miami, 6-0-3 since a 4-0 loss at the New York Red Bulls on March 23, avoided a second consecutive scoreless draw. Campana, who entered the match a minute earlier, received a pass from Sergio Busquets on the right wing and converted on a shot that landed inside the left post.

The win improved Eastern Conference-leading Miami to 9-2-4 with 31 points. DC United dropped to 4-5-5 and 17 points.

Miami has now won six and tied three since a 4-0 loss at New York Red Bulls on March 23.

Messi returned to the lineup after missing Wednesday’s match at Orlando because of knee soreness.

The Argentine star forward had at least one goal and assist in five consecutive matches until a 3-2 win at Montreal May 11. Messi began Saturday with a league-leading 12 assists.

Tightly-marked for most of the match, Messi found a slight opening in the 71st minute but his shot from 22 yards sailed high above the crossbar.

Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender preserved the shutout when he stopped a shot from United’s Jacob Murrell in the 86th minute.

The start of the match was delayed 25 minutes after thunderstorms hit Chase Stadium before the clubs’ pregame drills. The rain intensified again shortly after kickoff then subsided in the 30th minute.

Messi had two free kicks blocked by a wall of United defenders in the 21st and 39th minutes.

Both clubs continue their league schedule next Saturday, when Inter Miami visits Vancouver and DC United hosts Chicago.

The Warriors rarely looked like the erstwhile log leaders.

At Loftus a week ago they were left to lament a poor first half but this time they were thoroughly beaten to the punch by the Lions in the second.

The Warriors were far from their smart, sensible best and left themselves exposed through misadventure in attack.

They are a side that places a high premium on organisation but despite being a man up for the bulk of the match were caught short in defence when the Lions displayed their claws.

Not that the Lions were blemish free.

Poor goal kicking and ill discipline conspired against them in the first half.

Ruan Venter’s straight red card for head contact in the tackle due to poor technique had the potential of ruining their championship prospects.

In the end it didn’t and they live to fight another day.

Mamelodi Sundowns have now set a new record in the DSTV Premiership after jumping to 72 points with two games remaining. Sundowns beat second placed Stellenbosch FC 1-nil to register their 22nd win of the season.

The Brazilians, who are top of the log, have beaten their previous record of 71 points achieved in the 2015/2016 season under former coach Pitso Mosimane.

Meanwhile, Pirates are still third on the log after suffering their second defeat in a row. Pirates lost 1-nil to TS Galaxy in Mbombela. Galaxy are now 4th on the log table with 43 points.

The top of the table clash at the Danie Craven Stadium between DSTV Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns and second placed Stellenbosch FC was important for both sides.

A win for Sundowns was going to ensure they break the PSL record for the most points accumulated in a 30-game season.

On the other hand, maximum points for Stellenbosch FC was going to cement the second-place finish for the Winelands-based side, to ensure their participation in their maiden CAF Champions League campaign next season.

Both sides created several opportunities to score in the opening half, with Stellies keeper Sage Stephens denying Namibian Peter Shalulile in the 28th minute. The best chance of the match went to the home side after they were awarded a penalty.

This after Iqraam Rayners was fouled by Bathusi Aubaas inside the box. But Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams saved the penalty to deny Rayners his 15th goal of the season.

Lesiba Nku became Sundowns’ hero when he scored the only goal of the match in the 66th minute, after connecting with a cross from Thembinkosi Lorch.

In Mpumalanga third placed Orlando Pirates were also looking for a win to keep their CAF Champions League dream alive next season, whilst TS Galaxy are pushing for their best ever finish in South Africa’s topflight football by finishing in the top eight for the very first time.

Pirates were nearly punished in the opening minutes of the match, but keeper Sipho Chaine produced a brilliant save to keep his side in the game.

Sphiwe Mahlangu put the home side in the lead in the 68th minute, scoring his fourth goal in three matches.

Substitute Evidence Makgopa was unlucky to be denied by the upright nine minutes from time. Pirates tried everything possible to find the equaliser late in the match, but it ended 1-nil.

Playing at home the struggling Kaizer Chiefs needed a win to cement their place in the top eight bracket.

This was also a send-off match for Kaizer Chiefs veteran keeper Itumeleng Khune who is celebrating 25 years at the club.

The 36-year-old keeper joined Amakhosi as a young boy back in 1999 and went on to win many titles with the club and also became Bafana Bafana’s number one goalminder for many years.

There were no goals at half-time. Khune was eventually introduced with 15 minutes of play remaining.

The match ended goalless, which means that Chiefs are winless in their last four matches after playing three draws in a row.

The QB out of USC was the heavy betting favorite to be selected first, so it was no surprise that the franchise moved off former QB1 Justin Fields and onto Williams for next season.

On a recent episode of The Carton Show, Craig Carton praised Williams and the Bears’ potential ahead of next season.

“I’ve said it from jump … that dude’s gonna be a rockstar, FOX Sports host Craig Carton said. “The Chicago Bears are going to be a good football team. And I think it’s more likely that he has the C.J. Stroud-type of rookie season than he does the Bryce Young rookie season.

“I’m not saying they’re making the playoffs and winning a playoff game, but I think it’s on the table …  [Chicago] isn’t a walkover anymore. Bears are gonna be good. Don’t sleep on Chicago.”
